Description

The youngest child in a middle-class household dominated by unconventional women, Paola grows up between Ecuador and Colombia and finds herself unable to fit in any mold. From her conception- a stylized but anatomically complete sequence that sets the tone for the film’s matter-of-fact exploration of sexuality and family- to young adulthood, we accompany her as she fumbles her way through friendships, new schools, clunky romances, and various domestic dramas. Scrappy DIY black and white animation and lo-fi Latin-indie score lend a lovingly idiosyncratic charm to this thoughtful and deeply affecting coming-of-age story.

Based on the autobiographical graphic novel Powerpaola, this intricately animated coming-of-age story is a unique and utterly refreshing take on growing up and finding yourself.
