In this heart-rending yet eerily poetic debut from Laura Baumeister— the first feature narrative directed by a Nicaraguan female filmmaker— the bond between a young girl and her mother is tested when they are suddenly separated while eking out a precarious existence near the country’s biggest landfill.

Eleven-year-old María lives with her mother Lilibeth on the edge of Nicaragua’s biggest landfill, an oppressive place where the pair scramble to survive by recycling metal scraps and breeding their dog to sell the puppies. When a deal with a local gang member falls through, Lilibeth has to move to the outskirts of the city and leave María to work at a recycling factory. As days go by with no sign of her mother’s return, María feels abandoned, confused and angry. One night she meets Tadeo, a kind and romantic boy determined to help her find her mother.
